Acai Berry Buzz

By Mandy Urban

I was recently at a local mall polling middle-aged women and learned most had heard of the acai berry but recalled only a tiny portion of it's health importance. I asked where they had heard of it and most responded either Oprah or a magazine. So I decided to share some information about the acai berry and help others decide whether or not to buy products with this recently popular fruit. If you're interested in anti aging products for your skin like eye wrinkle creams and dark eye circles serums, it becomes particularly important.

What is acai berry?

It's a berry fruit relative to the blueberry, cranberry and pomegranate fruit family. It's usually about an inch long and is reddish purple, occasionally blue in color. It comes from the acai palm tree found across Central and South America but mostly harvested in rain forests in Brazil.

What are its health benefits?

There's a lot of research being done right now to affirm several theories about the acai berry. It is true that it has high amounts of antioxidants, much higher than other berries in its family. This is because of the presence of a substance called anthocyanin. Anthocyanin is responsible for the purplish, bluish hue in fruits and vegetables and is a type of antioxidant, which is particularly effective at fighting nearly every type of free radicals.

Free radicals are toxic substances that can enter the body and affect our immune system in several ways. Most exposure results from excessive UV ray contact, certain foods, and impurities in the air. They then damage vital cells and DNA in our body and cause certain illnesses as well as accelerate the aging process.

Why is it used in cosmetics?

Our skin is our first method of defense for the rest of our body, but its also most susceptible to free radical damage. If we neglect our skin, the results will become apparent over time. This is how skin develops wrinkles, dark circles under eyes, and can even lead to skin cancer. However, acai berries offer protection from free radicals and other damaging cells by contributing high levels of antioxidants. The oil within the acai berry is particularly rich in antioxidants. Studies have yet to show the exact level of effectiveness when used on the skin, but it has been proven to be a safer alternative to other tropical fruit oils.

The acai berry is garnering a lot of national attention as a natural ingredient in many anti aging products like eye wrinkle creams, several skin care products and even weight loss products. Research is still being conducted to prove its effectiveness in these areas, but its believed to be a healthy combatant against certain diseases caused by oxidative stress, as well as aging.
